Creative work

By Lic. Florencia Marín

Have you ever wondered why we are so reluctant to pay for services in the same way taht we do for goods? Specifically, I find that we show les willingness top ay for intelectual creative work, it is hard for us to pay the fees of the professional work ( call it artista, craftsman, architect, designer, etc) when we do not receive something tangible in return. “All they did was give me ideas, create a design, I bought everythung else”, does not sound familiar to you? That unique”something” is supported, in general, by years of study, career experience and a great thinking.

Each project involves research, experience, commitment and many hours of design.

In the case of research or large projects, many times are not considered the work hours of a priori investigation in order to come up with that particular design, the field work, multidisciplinary teams formed to meet all the requirements and regulations to be considered so that the Project is not infeasible on the paper from the start.

When we go to a store, whatever the type, we do not discuss the price of the good that we want to acquire, the price is convenient or not, so when a creative gives us the requested work which was previously monetarily agreed, understand a folder, sketch and/or test model, why do we feel empowered to try to renegotiate or delay the payment?

It is imperative to recognize and revalue creative work and that in the collective of societies the payment of a service or an idea becomes as common as that of a good.  In this way we encourage and support the creative industry in all its areas, as well as the power of ideas.
